This and That

  • I was interested to learn, while listening to From Our Own Correspondent, that the inscription on American bank notes "In God We Trust" was added as recently as the 1950s and 1960s.
  • In her autobiography Wait for Me! Deborah Mitford tells a story against herself. Lucian Freud's portrait of her was not entirely flattering. One day her husband, Andrew Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire, overheard someone ask "Who is that woman?" of the person in the picture. "It's my wife", he said. The first man replied, "Well, thank God it's not mine."
  • There are apparently over 600 million bloggers in China. I really don't know why I bother.
