“What a wee little part of a person’s life are his acts and his words! His real life is led in his head, and is known to none but himself. . . . His acts and his words are merely the visible thin crust of his world . . . and they are so trifling a part of his bulk! a mere skin enveloping it. The mass of him is hidden — it and its volcanic fires that toss and boil, and never rest, night nor day. These are his life, and they are not written, and cannot be written. . . . Biographies are but the clothes and buttons of the man — the biography of the man himself cannot be written.”

It's easy to find out who wrote these words by the simple expedient of looking up the first line on Google. But I wonder if you know who the author is without looking it up on the Internet? It came as something of a surprise to me.

Best Foreign Film?

With the Oscar season fast approaching, a new film entitled What Else?  has attracted a fair amount of buzz in informed circles. In this movie, Hollywood A-lister George Clooney plays the part of an impeccably groomed but casually attired man of indeterminate age named George. For reasons which are never made very clear, George is on a quest for capsules.

So far so good, but the plot thickens when he runs up against an unscrupulous taxi-driver in the shape of Pope Benedict MCMXII (Sid James John Malkovitch). It soon becomes clear that the Pope, too, has a thing about capsules and will stop at nothing in a bid to indulge his habit.

This wild and wacky comedy is exquisitely shot in full colour and on location in the capsule shops and streets of New York.

The Force of Habit

It's almost as difficult to get into new habits as it is to break free of old ones. Here is an example of what I mean: I have been subscribing to the International Herald Tribune for several years now and I would find it very difficult to do without it. Next year, however, I am seriously considering abandoning the print edition and switching to the electronic version which I would read on my iPad. The advantages are considerable: cost savings, no more missed deliveries, fairly regularly updated news, larger rain forests, etc. But I have been reading newsPAPERS for most of my life and I wonder if I will be able to make the switch after all this time.

As if aware of the predicament of people like me, The Tribune is currently and temporarily allowing people to download the electronic edition onto their iPad or other device free of charge, and I in turn am making a conscious effort to forswear the printed page in favour of the iPad. And I can now report that I am gradually getting used to the change and can begin to imagine a world without paper.

The only trouble is that if someone rips the paper out of your hand, you haven't lost very much, but if someone were to snatch your iPad, he (or more likely she) has walked off with a valuable piece of merchandise. That is why my prediction for 2011 is the introduction of chains and padlocks for your electronic device. But for goodness sake don't lose the key.

Marian Rivera, Out! Say hello to Anne Curtis as the newest endorser of SM Development Corporation (SMDC) SM Residences condominium.

Marian whose contract ends on January 2011, was unceremoniously dropped for Anne who already signed an endorsement contract effective December 1 of this year.

Vatican 'Belen' With 9 Pinoy Statues Unveiled!

With a Filipino Christmas carol as background music, the Vatican unveiled its Nativity scene on Friday at St. Peter's Square that for the first time ncluded nine Filipino statues.

A report on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website Saturday said the Filipino icons complemented the traditional figures of the Holy Family to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the Holy See.

Filipino sculptor Kublai Ponce-Millan designed the statues "to represent different indigenous groups of the Philippines in a festive celebration of faith, music, food and family on the occasion of the birth of Jesus," the CBCP report said.

"The attractive smiling figures dressed in colorful native attire and playing musical instruments, portray the joyful spirit of Philippine Christmas which is known as the 'longest and most festive celebration in the world.'"

This was the first time that the Vatican allowed a country outside Italy to participate in the preparations for its giant Nativity scene, which occupies more than 3,200 square feet of St. Peter's Square. The event was initiated in 1982 by the late Pope John Paul II.

The oldest statues in the reproduction of the Bethlehem scene were prepared by no less than a 19th-century saint of the Catholic Church, St. Vincent Pallotti.

"Filipinos are honored as they join the hundreds of pilgrims who come to St. Peter's Square at this time of the year, to contemplate the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who came to call all peoples into the one family of God," the CBCP report said.

Unveiling Rites

Philippine Ambassador to the Vatican Mercedes A. Tuason and Filipino community leader Josephine Bantug led Filipinos in Rome during the unveiling ceremony.

Angelo Cardinal Comastri, archpriest of the Basilica of St. Peter, led the prayer service, while a Filipino Christmas carol sung by the Karilagan Filipino choir from Sentro Pilipino was a special highlight of the occasion.

At 6 pm, Pope Benedict XVI lighted a candle for peace as he watched the unveiling ceremony from the window of the papal apartments. In the darkness, he blessed the assembled crowd with the light of the single candle, the CBCP report said.

Tuason thanked the Governorate of the Vatican City State for giving the Philippines "a special place in the center of the Roman Catholic Church's celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ this year."

The gesture, according to Giovanni Cardinal Lajolo, president of the governorate, was a recognition of the Philippines' special contribution to the Catholic Church, CBCP report said.

Lajolo noted the dynamic faith of Filipino Catholics and underlined that the Philippines is the largest Christian country in Asia, the report added.

"Kanto Boys The Movie" In The Works

From their wacky performances on variety show “ASAP XV,” “Kanto Boys” are now set to invade the big screen.

The all-male group is composed of Billy Crawford, Vhong Navarro, Luis Manzano and John Lloyd Cruz.

"Baka matuloy na din ang ‘Kanto Boys’ na movie. Napagsama na nga kami sa isang commercial," Luis said, referring to their television commercial for a seasoning product.

Luis also cleared speculations that they are competing against each other.

"Walang ganoon. We have our own fortes. Siyempre walang ku-kuwestiyon kay Lloydie sa galing niya sa pag-arte. Walang ku-kuwestiyon kay Vhong bilang comedian at sa galing sa pagsayaw din. At kay Billy bilang performer,” he said, adding in jest:

At nagkataong mayroon ding isa na pinagsama na lahat."

The group performs on “ASAP XV” every Sunday.

Advent in Widdington, Christmas in Paris, Spring in Dubai

Where will it all end?

At the Fleur de Lys pub in Widdington, "focal point of the village's activity" as Peter Sellers might have said, I could have troughed all night and still have asked for more. But my wife said "I understand dear, it's all been grand dear, but now it's time to return to Aubigny-en-Plaine.

And wouldn't it be loverly to spend all one's time in Capri or failing that the 15th arrondissement in Paris, at least until spring crept over the window sill?

At which time, with a little bit of luck, I would find myself in the UAE. Actually, I don't really care where I am as long as it's on 39B street.

Heart Evangelista and Dennis Trillo Star in GMA-7 Fantaserye 'Dwarfina'

Heart Evangelista has truly established herself as a capable and versatile actress. From portraying a clumsy wannabe writer in Full House to a strong-willed flight attendant in Langit Sa Piling Mo, the award-winning Kapuso actress has proven that she is able to effectively bring life any role, any story, whether it be drama, comedy, romance, or even fantasy.

But while growth has been a significant highlight in Heart's burgeoning career in the previous years, her role in GMA-7's upcoming original telefantasya literally lacks just that. In Dwarfina, Heart will assume the character of a girl born with one glaring abnormality: her height. Dwarfina is no taller than a finger as she was cursed by a black duwende after her parents accidentally destroyed a mound inhabited by the supernatural creatures.

Sharing billing with Heart is multi-awarded actor Dennis Trillo, who will play the role of Lyndon, Dwarfina's childhood best friend. Dennis plays a pivotal role in helping Dwarfina cope with her physical limitation, protecting and supporting her in every way.

Heart and Dennis welcome this opportunity to work once again with each other following their team-up in an episode for Dear Friend (Edison at Anna) as well as in the movie Mano Po last year. Despite being romantically involved with their respective partners, Heart and Dennis possess great chemistry on-camera and are both very excited to start working on the project, which is slated to premiere early next year.

Also in the cast of Dwarfina are Janice de Belen, Chanda Romero, Cris Villanueva, Mark Bautista, Iwa Moto, Derrick Monasterio, Yogo Singh, and Kylie Padilla--Dwarfina's family and friends from the mortal world. Meanwhile, Jackielou Blanco, Jestoni Alarcon, Angelica dela Cruz, Emilio Garcia, Pauleen Luna, Tony Mabesa, Will Devaughn, Gerard Pizarras, Bearwin Meily, Vaness del Moral, and Mico Aytona complete Dwarfina's supernatural world. The program will also feature the special participation of Ms. Lani Mercado.

With Director Mike Tuviera at the helm, the small but colorful world of Dwarfina opens this coming January 2011 on GMA Telebabad.

Manny Pacquiao is Sports Illustrated Magazine Top Boxing Story of 2010

Pound-for-pound King Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao was chosed by Sports Illustrated, the world’s most respected and oldest sports magazine, as as the No. 1 boxing story for 2010.

The 32-year-old Filipino champion (52-3-2 win-loss-draw record with 38 knockouts) was cited for his incredible feats for the year that’s about to end, which the mother of all sports magazines has labeled as “The Year of Pacquiao.”

Already boxing’s most exciting fighter, Manny Pacquiao became a global phenomeon in 2010, penetrating the American sporting mainstream like no Asian-born athlete in history,” according to Sports Illustrated’s columnist Bryan Armen Graham.

Graham also said in his recent column that “2010 is the year of Pacquiao,” the Filipino boxing icon having won eight titles in as many weight classes from various boxing-sanctioning bodies.

The heavy-handed southpaw crushed Joshua Clottey in March, then Antonio Margarito in November. In May, he was elected congressman in the lone district of his home province, Sarangani.

Pacman ranked 17th in the American magazine’s top male athletes of the decade, Tiger Woods of golf, Roger Federer of tennis and Michael Phelps of swimming occupying the top 3 positions.

But as far as boxing is concerned, Pacman is Sport Illustrated’s top choice for 2010.

The sports magazine that has 3.5 million subscribers cited Pacman for having won eight world titles in as many weight divisions, or nearly half of the 17 weight classifications there is in boxing.

In 2010, Pacman was everywhere. He was on 60 Minutes, Time Magazine, BIOgraphy Channel, Jimmy Kimmel Show, and was honored by the Boxing Writers Association of American as its Fighter of the Decade.

Despite all the accolades, Pacman remained down to earth.

I’m just an ordinary boxer trying to make the people happy,” he said, adding that he’s not after all the awards because to him, giving his best in every fight is the most important thing.

It’s the only way I can give it back to the fans,” he’d often say.

Ranked second, behind Pacman’s success story was Floyd Mayweather, whom others still consider as the pound-for-pound champion, but not much for his victory over Shane Mosley last May.

Graham mentioned Mayweather’s personal battles, including a domestic violence case that could keep him in jail until he grows old, and a “profanity-laced and racially-charged” online tirade against Pacman.

I’ll make that mother f----- make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice,” was part of Mayweather’s verbal flurry that was caught on video, He did apologize, saying he was just having fun.

Incidentally, the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, the superfight that just wouldn’t happen, was Sport Illustrated’s No. 10 boxing story for the year. It was supposed to take place last May, but never did.

The megafight that didn’t happen. This was the year we all learned much more than we cared to know about Olympic-style drug testing,” wrote Graham in his compilation.

Unfortunately, Mayweather-Pacquiao is no longer a dream matchup, it’s an obligation: a fight the public has made. It wouldn’t just be a showdown between the sport’s two best pound-for-pound fighters.

“(I)t’d be the most delicious clash of styles boxing fans have seen in ages: Pacquiao’s oppressive, offensive force against Mayweather, the foremost defensive tactician of our generation,” Graham continued.

On December 24, Sports Illustrated’s Georgina Turner listed the campaign of the Philippines’ men’s football team in the Suzuki Cup as the No. 10 football story of year.

The Filipinos, fondly called “Azkals” (street dogs) and considered minnows in Asian football, upset reigning champion Vietnam, 2-0, to make it to the semifinals of the tournament organized by the Asean Football Federation.

It was the farthest that a Philippine football team had reached in a major tournament in decades.

MMFF 2010 Faces of the Night:

"Rosario" is 2010 MMFF 2nd Best Picture; Jennylyn Mercado and Albert Martinez Failed To Get The Best Actress and Best Director Nominations

"Rosario", a Cinemabuhay and Studio 5 entry to the 2010 MMFF, and the critics choice to sweep this years MMFF awards, lost the Best Picture trophy to Star Cinema comedy entry "Ang Tanging Ina Mo, Last Na To!" getting only the 2nd Best Picture award.

Unlike in the past year's staging of MMFF where box office performance of the movie was the main criterion for identifying the Best Picture award, the 36th MMFF based its judging on the movie's artistry, creativity and technical excellence, innovativeness, thematic value and global appeal, which comprise 70 percent, and Filipino cultural and/or historical value, 30 percent.

This year, the MMFF Committee also decided to mention only the top three nominees for each category.

Aside from the Second Best Picture award, "Rosario", also won 5 awards: Gatpuno Villagas Cultural Award, Best Supporting Actor for Dolphy, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography and Best Editing.

Interestingly, the film's lead star Jennylyn Mercado was not even nominated for Best Actress category and its director, Albert Martinez failed to get the Best Director nomination. Why oh why!?!

"Rosario" who takes on the true life story of Rosario Pereira, the grandmother of PLDT Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan, written and financed by MVP himself and directed by Albert Martinez. is graded A for excellence by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB).

Dolphy Wins Double Acting Awards in the 2010 MMFF

Despite the controversy that surrounded his latest MMFF movie entry days before Christmas day and the petition made by some devoted religious individuals to boycott the movie, Dolphy, who announced that this may be his last appearance in the festival due to his health condition, wins this year's Best Actor award for his movie "Father Jejemon".

Aside from the Best Actor award, Dolphy also set a record of being the first-ever double acting winner in festival history by also winning the Best Supporting Actor for his special role in "Rosario".

Regretfully, the Comedy King was not able to attend the ceremonies.

Ai Ai delas Alas Named MMFF 2010 Best Actress; Ang Tanging Ina Mo Last Na 'To! Wins 9 Festival Awards

It's a wish granted for Ai Ai delas Alas!

She prayed for it...very hard! Truly, prayers do make impossible possible. And now, after its 35 years of existence, the MMFF Best Actress award goes to a non-drama actress, and who else deserves that recognition, at least for this year, but Ai Ai delas Alas of Ang Tanging Ina Mo, Last Na 'To! MMFF Star Cinema movie entry.

Ai Ai was very vocal about wanting to win the title. She said she really wanted to be the first comedy actress to win such award (Dolphy, who is also this year's Best Actor, is the first comedian to win a MMFF Best Actor award for his 1990 entry Espadang Patpat).

Aside from the Best Actress award, the movie also won 8 other awards: Best Picture, Best Director for Wenn Deramas, Best Supporting Actress for Eugene Domingo, Best Screenplay, Best Story, Best Musical Score, Best Child Performer, Gender Sensitive Award.

Angel Locsin Talks About Possible Transfer to TV5

Angel Locsin denied the rumor that she is supposedly planning to transfer TV networks again. Just recently some tabloids have insinuated that Angel might be joining the bandwagon of stars who will be switching TV networks.

Nabalitaan ko rin, pero imposibleng mangyari naman kasi may kontrata pa ako sa ABS-CBN,” clarified Angel. She added that her contract with the Kapamilya network will exist until next year.

Hindi ko naman ho siguro hobby ‘yung lumipat ng istasyon,” joked Angel, who has previously transferred to ABS-CBN from GMA-7 in 2007. The Imortal actress also justified that she has no plans of switching TV networks because she is happy with her current home network. “Kung naa-appreciate ‘yung talent mo naa-appreciate ko rin na nare-recognize ka. Malaki kasi ang utang na loob ko sa ABS-CBN (and) so far okay naman ‘yung mga projects na ibinibigay nila sa akin.”

The actress also denied that she got an offer from TV5 and further explained that the substantial projects that she is currently doing only proves that she is being taken good care of by the Kapamilya network.

Meantime, Angel shared her excitement over the upcoming season two of the primetime teleserye Imortal and added that fans can expect the story to intensify in the coming weeks. “Abangan n’yo po kung ano ang magiging itsura ni Mateo (John Lloyd Cruz) ‘pag naging bampira na siya. Tingnan natin kung ano ang look niya, syempre tingnan natin kung hanggang saan ang pag-iibigan nina Lia (played my Angel) at Mateo and ang mga bago pang characters na papasok.”

She said that she is having a short break this Christmas and she is looking forward to spending her vacation with her family.

On the other hand, Volumes 1 and 2 of Imortal are recently released on video and are now available in leading video stores nationwide.

Star Power Girls Meet Kapamilya Leading Men

The remaining 7 finalists of Star Power will sing for their favorite Kapamilya leading men and compete at the same time as one of them could be eliminated.

Star Power was filled with relief last Sunday as the ultimate Megastar Sharon Cuneta revealed that night was a non-elimination showdown. This Sunday, however, the remaining girls must give their best performances as another contender is set to bid goodbye.

The pressure is greater as the Star Power finalists must enthrall their favorite Kapamilya leading men—Derek Ramsay, Zanjoe Marudo, Gerald Anderson, Jericho Rosales, Sam Milby and John Lloyd Cruz—with their performances. Plus, Divine Diva Zsazsa Padilla and of course, Mega, teach the girls how to “evoke emotions” through singing.

The hot leading men must choose the song that have warmed their hearts, to be sung by the Star Power girls.

Siyempre kabado na naman kaming mga girls. Before we only sing for ourselves, now we have to serenade television’s most handsome leading men. Nakakakilig diba? But we have to give our best shot,” said Cebuana Akiko.

Krissel, on the other hand feels very honored being mentored by the Divine Diva. She said that like Mega, Zsazsa also treats them like daughters in show business. “Nakaka-touch po talaga si Ms. Zsazsa. Tinandaan ko po talaga yung unang advice niya sa amin dati, at ngayon na mine-mentor niya kami, hindi ko po kakalimutan yung mga itinuturo niya.”

Akiko Solon (Cebu), Ninay Lescano (Lipa City), Kaye Racho (Cebu), K-La Rivera (Canada), Angeline Quinto (City of Manila), Krissel Valdez (Davao) and Monica Sacay (Leyte), who among them will be hailed as Sharon’s Next Female Pop Superstar?
