Winter Time 2010

A year ago almost to the day, I described a very simple way of remembering whether you should put the clock back or forward at the beginning of winter/summer time.
If you missed it, here is what to do:
- Winter time. Just remember the expression "fall forward". This way you'll never again forget to put the clocks forward.
- Summer time. Remember the expression "spring back". This will remind you to put your clocks back and enjoy a nice leisurely lie-in.

No more missed train and air connections. No more arriving an hour early for an appointment!

The Way Ahead

THE STORY SO FAR

If you remember we left Britain in a state of ruin and with no clear indication of how we are get out of the mess that Gordon and others so thoughtfully got us into. George has come up with some wheezes for cutting back on public spending which are all right as far as they go. But the trouble is that, even if they went twice as far, they wouldn't go nearly far enough.

So what can we possibly do to put things right?

  • We must stop importing virtually everything from China and friends. I mean, almost everything in my house was made in China, except my wife who was made in France, to the best of my knowledge.
  • We must start exporting stuff to China and friends and to others currently importing goods from China.

How can this be done? More in my next post.

Our Island Story

My point is this: what if it didn't make a blind bit of difference what measures we took to put our house in order? What if a newer, leaner Britain, rearing to go and more competitive than ever, STILL couldn't export its products and even its grey matter, simply because China, India and Brazil have educated themselves up to and beyond our level, with the result that we have nothing to sell them which they can't produce better and cheaper at home? After all, we're already getting Indians to help our children with their homework.
Has any politician of whatever persuasion prepared for that eventuality?
Is there, then, no hope?
Please read my next entry, aptly entitled "The Way Ahead", to find the answer.

George Versus Paul (Part 2)

To recap: George says we have been very naughty and now deserve to be punished. At heart Paul does not deny the naughtiness charge, but like St Augustine, asks God to make us frugal - but not just yet.
These are sophisticated points of view, cogently argued by some of the finest brains of this or any other generation, and they deserve better than to be laughed out of court by the likes of cheapskate bloggers such as this one.
But I do actually have a serious point to make, if you will bear with me in my next post.

They Can't Both be Right

Who's it to be - Paul Krugman or George Osborne? They can't both be right. The former, winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics, says that that the swingeing spending cuts imposed by the Conservative-Lib/Dem coalition before the economy has had time to recover are likely to push Britain into the sort of long-term recession experienced by Japan. The latter says there is no alternative to drastically reducing, if not eliminating, our massive deficit now.
As I say, they can't both be right. But could they both be wrong? Watch this space!

Video to Watch: Kapuso Christmas Station ID 2010 - "Isang Pagkilala sa Puso ng Pilipino Ngayong Pasko"

GMA-7 launches its Christmas Station ID for 2010 titled, "Isang Pagkilala sa Puso ng Pilipino Ngayong Pasko," a series of true-to-life inspiring stories. Meaning, there are three different GMA-7 Christmas Station IDs.

GMA-7's Christmas Station ID 2010 tell the real-life tales of Filipinos who, by sharing what they can, have made a difference in the lives of many. Starring in the vignettes are three of GMA-7's biggest Kapuso stars: Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera and Richard Gutierrez.

Richard Gutierrez plays Ed, a US immigrant based in Las Vegas, Nevada, whose heart remains very Filipino. With his wife, he personally packs balikbayan boxes with toys and school supplies and ships these at Christmas time to children in different provinces.

Marian Rivera portrays Mila, a woman who literally opens her home to the less fortunate. Mila welcomes the Season of Advent by selling Christmas decors in her garage. She uses the money she earns to prepare food and feed more than 200 families on New Year’s Eve.

Dingdong Dantes is cast as Jose, a modern day Christmas angel. Jose spends Christmas Eve going to different hospitals in Metro Manila, paying the bills of indigent patients unable to afford treatment. When the surprised families of these patients ask to thank him in person, they are told by hospital staffers that Jose has already left.

Shot in high-definition (HD) digital video technology, "Isang Pagkilala sa Puso ng Pilipino Ngayong Pasko," the 2010 GMA-7 Christmas ID is also slated to be shown in SM Cinemas.

TV Patrol World Update: Julius Babao and Karen Davila Out. Noli de Castro and Korina Sanchez In!

There will be some major major changes in the news department of ABS-CBN after the exit of Maria Ressa. The first casualty? TV Patrol World.

The news and current affairs bosses have talked to Julius Babao and Karen Davila that certain reformats will be made in TV Patrol and that certain personalities will be put in their place. Although they haven’t been directly assured, the evening slots of Bandila have been reserved for them.

So who are likely to go back to primetime news?

Since the old guards are back, it won’t be hard to understand the return of broadcasters-on-extended leaves Noli de Castro and Korina Sanchez to be back to work along with fellow old guard Ted Failon.

Although Kapamilyas may deny this but the move may be the network’s reaction to Willie Revillame’s show—which is fast closing in on TV Patrol’s ratings.

How will this impact on Julius’ and Karen’s careers? Oh well, they must have felt earlier on that they will be the sacrificial lambs in this whole circus. After all, ratings result is god in the television industry. But don’t you think they deserve better?

GLEE Season 2 'Rocky Horror Glee Show' Recap

The Glee kids are still minus Puck, but this week, things get horrific. Will is growing more and more jealous of Emma and Carl and their close relationship so he does what any lovestruck guy would do. He tries to make himself more appealing. Seeing that Emma and Carl have bonded over their love of Rocky Horror, he fibs that he’s been planning the school musical to be a production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Rachel volunteers herself and Finn to be Brad and Janet but Finn has never seen the show. He has no idea he has to be in his underwear and he’s insecure about his body. Aww :( .

Kurt refuses to be the transvestite Frank n Furter (lulz) and opts to take on Riff Raff instead, while the girls share the other parts. Sam willingly takes on the part of Rocky so he’s able to once again spend the majority of the episode shirtless. I’m not entirely complaining. Local news managers encourage Sue to do an expose about the musical’s inappropriate nature and she gets her hands dirty pretending to help out. Seeing that the group doesn’t have Frank n Furter, Carl offers to help. Will insists he auditions for the part and he gives my favorite performance of the night. John Stamos is HOT ya’ll. Santana is practically pouncing on him during his number. Not willing to rock the fishnets, Mercedes takes the role of Frank n Furter and Carl gets Eddie. Anyone else a bit depressed at the tease of John Stamos performing in drag? :(

Will becomes frustrated at how well Carl is doing and asks Emma to be costume designer so he can spend more time with her. If that isn’t enough, when Sam is uncomfortable in the teeny tiny gold shorts, Will decides to take the part of Rocky for himself. Yuck. He asks Emma to help him rehearse and they perform an incredibly awkward version of Touch a Touch a Touch Me. It’s creeptastic and kind of gross. Why hasn’t Will been fired yet? Carl confronts Will about him making moves on Emma and Will is forced to admit he is doing Rocky Horror for himself and not the kids. Worried he may be risking being allowed to have Glee Club at all, he cancels the musical and the kids perform Time Warp for themselves.

Kabarkada Network Beats the Kapatid Network

Studio 23 is on a winning streak as its national audience share grew to an average of 5% in September, based on recent data from Kantar Media.

The Kabarkada network has overtaken TV5 in the noontime block as it is now in third place with an average audience share of 9% in September vs TV5′s 5%.

With new programming and offerings introduced since January 2010, Studio 23′s audience share has grown to 5% from its average of 1.8% in January 2010.

Studio 23 Head March Ventosa attributed Studio 23′s impressive performance to its latest offerings of movies during lunch and early primetime, Koreanovelas, animes, Top Rank boxing matches, WWE Superstars, UFC and UAAP/NCAA games.

"We have been innovating. Since the start of the year we’ve actually introduced a series of TV programming initiatives and we are proud to say that these initiatives have actually been very successful for us. The audience reception has been very positive and we are proud to say that we now rank fourth overall in the market," said Studio 23 Head March Ventosa in a recent press conference.

Studio 23’s success in programming and growth in audience shares prompted it to innovate and introduce more new programs starting Oct 4.

Mornings on Studio 23 begin with a strong news and current affairs line-up to keep viewers informed of the latest happenings through the free TV telecast of DZMM TeleRadyo’s “Radyo Patrol Balita Alas-Siete” with Ted Failon and “Dos Por Dos” with Anthony Taberna and Gerry Baja from 7 am to 8:30 am.

Kids get their daily dose of their favorite Nickolodeon cartoons with “Catdog” and “Danny Phantom” every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; and “Wonderpets” and “Chalkzone” every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM.

With the positive response from viewers on its local programming, Studio 23 has introduced three new shows on its 9:30 pm weeknight block, namely “3ow P0wgz!” with Ryan Bang on Mondays, “Usapang Lalake” with Alex Calleja, Arran Sese, Jobert Austria, and Boom Labrusca on Wednesdays, and “Pa-Bida Ka!” with RR Enriquez and Aaron Atayde on Fridays.

Studio 23 has also introduced a new format for its primetime newscast “iBA-BALITA” with Anthony Taberna, who not only delivers news and analysis, but also does live interviews with newsmakers. In its first week of airing, Anthony scored a coup with a one-on-one live interview with Executive Secretary Jojo Ochoa. Taberna also tackled the controversial reproductive health bill by interviewing parents of big families to help ordinary viewers understand and make sense of the issue.

Kabarkadas will also get to watch a primetime replay of the hit crime docu-drama “SOCO” anchored by Gus Abelgas every Tuesday at 9:30 PM and the explosive investigative reports of Julius Babao, Pinky Webb, and Anthony Taberna in “XXX” every Thursday at 9:30 PM.

For it’s U.S. series, Studio 23 will be airing the highly-anticipated sixth and final season of “Lost,” which premieres on Philippine free TV on Wednesday, November 3, at 10:00 p.m.

The Limits of Search -- Adobe Buzzword

The other day I was trying to get some hard information about the special statute enjoyed by the SNCM (Société Nationale Maritime Corse Méditerranée), the transport company running ferries between the French mainland and Corsica. The company was in the news recently because it took advantage of the present unrest in France, caused by the government's decision to raise the retirement age, to exact a commitment from the government, mindful not to start too many fires at the same time, that its special statute (advantageous employment and retirement benefits) would not be changed.

Well, I spent the best part of two hours scouring the Internet for FACTS about this special statute and, do you know, I could not find any facts at all! Plenty of invective on all sides but precious little objective facts. You would have thought, with all the information now available on the Internet, not to mention the profusion of blogs, that you would be able to find out anything about anything. Not so!

When you get down to it, an awful lot of blogs are really rants. You may or may not agree with a particular rant but such blogs are not a very good port of call if you are looking for objective information.

Anyway, in the case of the SNCM we seem to be confronted with a particularly virulent outbreak of omerta!

Cars 2 - Teaser Trailer

Disney and Pixar have unveiled the teaser trailer for Cars 2.

The plot: Star racer Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in Cars 2 when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret spy mission, Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world. Adding to the fast-paced fun is a colorful new all-car cast that includes secret agents, menacing villains and international racing competitors.

Cars 2 hits 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on June 24, 2011.
